What Do King Cobras Eat?

To summarize what do king cobras eats their main diet consists of lizards, toads, small mammals, eggs, chickens, birds and even other snakes!

As mentioned on other pages of our website as well is that snakes are carnivores and they like to swallow they prey alive and whole for the most part. However, King Cobra snakes sometimes first bite their prey to subdue them and then once the venom kills the prey they will swallow it whole.

After a King Cobra swallows it's prey it will often lay in the sun for many hours at a time to help increase their body temperature when helps with the digestive process.

It is at this point when King Cobra snakes are most vulnerable.

One other cool thing to note about King Cobras is that after they eat a meal they can go for months without eating because they are cold blooded creatures and do not use a lot of energy to live.

So, what do they eat?

To give more detail a King Cobra will also actually seek out to eat other snakes. They are known as the snake eater. There are a variety of snakes that a King Cobra will try to eat. It will even sometimes eat other poisonous or venomous snakes. However for the most part they will avoid those kinds of snake. They are also known to even eat other cobras!

The particular type of snakes they will eat include:

  • Rat Snakes
  • Sizeable Pythons
  • Kraits
  • Cobras
  • Small members of their own species

Then as also mentioned above they will eat small vertebrates. Things such as rodents (rat and mice), birds, lizards, etc.

The King Cobras most common food is rat snakes.
