Snakes are known as animals that can go an extremely long time without eating because of the nature of the way they eat their food and how they slowly digest food overtime.

It isn’t uncommon for a garter snake to go months without eating depending on various factors such as their health, age, weather conditions and more.

Garter snakes will hibernate in the winter depending on the weather and therefore will go periods of 2 or 3 months without eating and also before they shed their skin they will go days or weeks without eating sometimes.

So to answer the question – how long can garter snakes go without eating the answer is roughly 2 to 3 months but it has been noted in rare instances can be as long as a year. However it is not recommended that you try and feed your garter snake that little.

If your garter snake doesn’t eat for a period of time don’t worry right away because factors such as weather and shedding their skin can cause them to not want to eat. Usually they will go back to eating afterwards.

Make sure to provide your garter snake with plenty of fresh water in the meanwhile.

In general garter snakes are not picky eaters but they are carnivorous in nature like all snakes. They will stick to mainly eating insects and animals.

If your garter snake is brave it will basically eat anything in can kill and shallow. This particular snake will swallow its food whole and then digest the food later.

Garter snakes will also eat foods they can find near water sources such as bluegill fish, creek chubs and golden shiners.

Other regular meals include crayfish.

They will also eat bird’s eggs and birds. Additionally rodents and mice can also become a dinner time meal for garter snakes.

And finally they will also eat road kill such as run over toads and frogs.
